About The MicroLogix 1500 Series Aug 19, 2023
The MicroLogix 1500 Programmable Logic Controllers are modularly designed with many components that can be changed to accommodate different application needs in terms of power type and processor capabilities, as well as several components that can be easily added to the devices to increase their scope. The basic elements used to configure these PLCs are base units that include 120 to 240 Volts AC or 24 Volts DC power supplies and 24 or 28 I/Os and processors. When the desired categories of these 2 types of components are selected and physically connected, the devices become fully functional and the items visible on the units are removable terminal blocks, interfaces to expansion modules (hidden behind the plate), groups of input and output status LEDs, device status LEDs, communication ports, batteries, mode switches, and trim potentiometers. Other parts that can be additionally mounted are a memory module, a replacement battery, and a data access tool.     The programming of the MicroLogix 1500 small programmable logic controllers is done by using the RSLogix 500 software when the controllers are connected to personal computers. The 1769 compact expansion I/O modules can be attached to the device to expand its I/O capabilities. The digital input circuit types on the MicroLogix 1500 devices are 24 Volts DC sink/source or 120 Volts AC inputs, and the digital output circuit types are relays or combinations of relays and FET transistors. To determine the current status of the PLCs, the users have 8 status LEDs which are the power, run, fault, force, battery-low, COMM 0, COMM 1, and DCOMM LEDs. The operating system of the units can be upgraded with a newer one in the controlFLASH upgrade kit.

The CompactLogix system is a Logix controller system widely used in medium and small industrial applications. These systems are used to control applications on the machine level. In general, a CompactLogix system is built by using a controller equipped with I/O modules and the DeviceNet communication network. The manufactured CompactLogix system offers state-of-the-art control, I/O, and communication in a compact package. It is manufactured with different specifications to meet different application needs based on the input type, output, memory type, communication module, enclosure type, and mounting options. The CompactLogix system can be controlled by using the RSLogix 5000 programming software. The Logix system is equipped with a variety of communication ports, including the Ethernet/IP and ControlNet ports. These ports are used with different kinds of networks. The built-in serial port is available to connect extra add-on devices to the controller system. The device support local expansion modules. The CompactLogix system can support 16/30 I/O modules with a maximum of 3 I/O banks with 2 expansion cables. The controller can keep the network parameters at any legal node address. An additional CompactFlash card can be added for extra storage. All the CompactLogix systems can be mounted by using a DIN Rail. During mounting, the spacing between enclosure walls and wireways should be maintained for proper airflow. The controllers are equipped with a lithium-ion battery to supply power. The batteries should be stored in a cool and dry place. All of the controller devices are equipped with a reset button which clears the user programs from the internal memory if the controllers have trouble during the startup. The controllers support device-level ring, linear, and traditional star topology. All of the CompactLogix controllers come with a 1-year warranty, starting from the date of installation.

  • Siemens Creates New Vertical Market Dedicated to Intralogistics in the U.S.
Siemens Creates New Vertical Market Dedicated to Intralogistics in the U.S. Mar 17, 2023
Siemens recently announced the formation of the new Intralogistics vertical that brings best-in-class material handling thought leadership, hardware automation, software and service solutions to customers in the United States. Siemens is leveraging its broad technology to address the market needs for digital transformation, cybersecurity, safety and sustainability. This new group will operate both as a vertical industry group and a horizontal business operation. It will reside within the Siemens Digital Industries—Motion Control business and functions in tandem with the organization’s existing additive manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, food-and-beverage and other industry verticals. Joel Thomas is the head of the Intralogistics vertical. Besides management of the group, Thomas will also work closely with trade associations who serve the intralogistics industry and will foster programs at Siemens to educate the next generation of engineers, programmers, software developers and plant operations personnel who will manage the warehouses of the future.  This new group will serve machine builders and end-customers alike. For example, using the Siemens TIA Portal, a warehouse facility or postal clearing house will be able to integrate all its motion control hardware, software systems and communications protocols, internal and external, as needed. Additionally, Siemens digital twin and simulation technologies allow a warehouse or manufacturing operation to test all the “what ifs” before taking action on a material handling challenge. Further, noted Joel Thomas, “The goal for all companies should be smart manufacturing and automated material flow, which is adaptable to changing market and technology conditions. This is especially challenging in older brownfield operations, where the legacy equipment might not handle the needs of the company, tomorrow or even today.”   Predictive analytics and predictive maintenance will also be among the key drivers for the Siemens Intralogistics business, as it strives to offer users the needed system components to maximize productivity and to gather the data needed to monitor and maintain the operation. The biggest challenge for this new group, according to Thomas, is to identify and bring the necessary skills and solutions to the resident knowledge base for each customer. He notes this varies considerably based upon each company’s size and onboard skill sets. Thomas also comments how sustainability, which involves energy consumption and the ability to anticipate what equipment and software will be needed in the future to keep the plant running at maximum efficiency, will be a critical factor in the service package provided to customers. Lastly, with use of this digital-to-real world technology, the Intralogistics business will help companies achieve a more productive eco-system and, with various Siemens solutions and services, a homogenous environment in the future-proofing of their op...
