  • Siemens Creates New Vertical Market Dedicated to Intralogistics in the U.S.
Siemens Creates New Vertical Market Dedicated to Intralogistics in the U.S. Mar 17, 2023
Siemens recently announced the formation of the new Intralogistics vertical that brings best-in-class material handling thought leadership, hardware automation, software and service solutions to customers in the United States. Siemens is leveraging its broad technology to address the market needs for digital transformation, cybersecurity, safety and sustainability. This new group will operate both as a vertical industry group and a horizontal business operation. It will reside within the Siemens Digital Industries—Motion Control business and functions in tandem with the organization’s existing additive manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, food-and-beverage and other industry verticals. Joel Thomas is the head of the Intralogistics vertical. Besides management of the group, Thomas will also work closely with trade associations who serve the intralogistics industry and will foster programs at Siemens to educate the next generation of engineers, programmers, software developers and plant operations personnel who will manage the warehouses of the future.  This new group will serve machine builders and end-customers alike. For example, using the Siemens TIA Portal, a warehouse facility or postal clearing house will be able to integrate all its motion control hardware, software systems and communications protocols, internal and external, as needed. Additionally, Siemens digital twin and simulation technologies allow a warehouse or manufacturing operation to test all the “what ifs” before taking action on a material handling challenge. Further, noted Joel Thomas, “The goal for all companies should be smart manufacturing and automated material flow, which is adaptable to changing market and technology conditions. This is especially challenging in older brownfield operations, where the legacy equipment might not handle the needs of the company, tomorrow or even today.”   Predictive analytics and predictive maintenance will also be among the key drivers for the Siemens Intralogistics business, as it strives to offer users the needed system components to maximize productivity and to gather the data needed to monitor and maintain the operation. The biggest challenge for this new group, according to Thomas, is to identify and bring the necessary skills and solutions to the resident knowledge base for each customer. He notes this varies considerably based upon each company’s size and onboard skill sets. Thomas also comments how sustainability, which involves energy consumption and the ability to anticipate what equipment and software will be needed in the future to keep the plant running at maximum efficiency, will be a critical factor in the service package provided to customers. Lastly, with use of this digital-to-real world technology, the Intralogistics business will help companies achieve a more productive eco-system and, with various Siemens solutions and services, a homogenous environment in the future-proofing of their op...

  • Bentley Systems Announces Acquisition
Bentley Systems Announces Acquisition Feb 25, 2023
Feb. 23, 2023 - Bentley Systems, the infrastructure engineering software company, announced it has acquired EasyPower, a leading developer of design and analysis software tools, including arc flash solutions, for electrical engineering professionals. Since its founding in 1984, Portland, Oregon-based EasyPower has innovatively combined graphics-based modeling and analysis in order to make solving complex electrical engineering problems ever more straightforward and accessible. EasyPower products are primarily used for designing, analyzing, and monitoring power distribution systems serving industrial and commercial facilities, to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. Bentley’s acquisition of EasyPower, to extend integrated and iterative power systems design and analysis for infrastructure digital twins of every type, broadens its comprehensiveness in infrastructure engineering. With an increasingly electrified future and with disparate and widely distributed energy resources on both sides of “the meter,” all infrastructure assets will benefit–in performance, economics, safety and resilience–from continued simulation and assessment of power distribution conditions and designs over their project and operating lifecycles. Priorities for Bentley Systems will include integrating EasyPower’s schema and digital workflows with Bentley’s OpenBuildings, OpenFlows, OpenPlant, OpenRail, and Bentley Raceway and Cable Management applications.   CEO Greg Bentley said, “All infrastructure projects and assets have power distribution systems, which are too frequently analyzed using unnecessarily complicated software that is disconnected from 3D/4D BIM and digital twin workflows. By incorporating EasyPower within our design and modeling portfolio, and our iTwin Platform, we can help enable the distribution systems powering infrastructure to be more readily adapted to new imperatives for sustainability and resilience, while making electrical safety assurance more ubiquitous, accessible, and evergreen.”   EasyPower CEO Kevin Bates said, “We are delighted to be joining Bentley Systems at this point of inflection for electrical power in infrastructure, and in infrastructure digital twins. For nearly 40 years, EasyPower has been simplifying complex electrical engineering problems and helping our customers to confidently complete the job at hand. Our purpose has been to make electricity more accessible, more reliable, and safer to use. Within and for Bentley Systems, we can now substantially scale up EasyPower’s reach – across the world, across infrastructure sectors, and across digital twin lifecycles!”

  • 88% of Business Leaders Would Be Happier If Administrative Tasks Were Automated
88% of Business Leaders Would Be Happier If Administrative Tasks Were Automated Feb 18, 2023
A quarter of business leaders (27%) are regularly feeling burnt out at work, according to SS&C Blue Prism’s Empower the People research report. As a result, these leaders are 40% more likely to struggle with managing their workloads, with 66% revealing they waste over an hour a day on administrative work, demonstrating a growing need for a stronger work-life balance. SS&C Blue Prism's research looked at the views of more than 1,000 business decision makers across a variety of industries around the world. In addition to uncovering prominent issues of burnout, the study also found that, for 88% of business leaders, automating administrative work would make them both happier and more engaged at work. Meanwhile, the study also stated that disengaged employees are on the rise, especially amongst Gen-Z. Burnout in the workplace is at an all-time high, leading to ongoing trends like “The Great Resignation” and “quiet quitting”. This is an issue given that engaged employees are more productive, according to the “Empower the People” study, which also said that those who are happiest and most engaged at work were 31% more likely to focus on their careers. The research determined that automation plays an important role, with the most satisfied employees having a quarter less (25%) administrative tasks, which automation inherently reduces, to do than their less satisfied counterparts. Automation was also reported to reduce feelings of stress and create time for important tasks (53%), facilitate upskilling and training (48%), and enable more strategic work (53%). The study showed how intelligent automation drives value and efficiency gains not only by making repetitive tasks faster and error-free, but also by changing the way people work and interact, giving them more time to focus on value-adding work. “Work has clearly changed over the course of the past few years. Many employees are feeling the effects of being overworked and overrun with unnecessary administrative tasks. This study not only highlights that burnout and disengagement in the workplace need to be taken seriously, but it also uncovers a viable solution: intelligent automation. With intelligent automation, workers are able to seek out growth opportunities, adding meaning to their careers, and they’re able to achieve that seemingly allusive work-life balance while utilizing and developing their skillset,” commented Colin Redbond, Global SVP of Product and Strategy at SS&C Technologies Blue Prism. In addition to the direct benefits to employees, the overall business sees gains as employees collaborate with digital workers and entire processes are reengineered to align with predetermined business outcomes at scale. These business-wide benefits were found to include: Productivity gains (75%) More engagement (32%) Strategic advantage (36%)
