VM600 MPC4 Machinery Protection Card Delivers Continuous, High‑Reliability Monitoring for Critical Rotating Assets Jul 07, 2026

Central Processing Core for RealTime Machinery Protection

The VM600 MPC4 200510070112 machinery protection card is the central element within the VM600 series machinery protection system (MPS) from Meggitt's VibroMeter® product line. Designed for continuous online monitoring of critical rotating equipment in harsh industrial environments, this 6Uhigh module installs in the front of a VM600 rack and operates as a card pair with a corresponding IOC4T input/output card at the rear. The card provides four independently programmable dynamic signal channels and two dedicated tachometer (speed) channels, enabling simultaneous measurement of acceleration, velocity, displacement, eccentricity, thrust position, expansion, and dynamic pressure. Built around advanced DSP techniques, the MPC4 processes signals in real time, delivering the computational power required for demanding protection applications across power generation, oil and gas, heavy industry, and petrochemical processing.

Comprehensive Signal Conditioning and Flexible Configuration

The MPC4 200510070112 accepts a wide variety of sensor inputs, including IEPE accelerometers, proximity probes, magnetic pickups, and velocity sensors. Its dynamic inputs support voltage ranges of 0 to ±20 V DC and ±10 V AC maximum, with common mode voltage tolerance from 50 V to +50 V, a CMRR exceeding 60 dB at 50 Hz, and crosstalk of 72 dB, ensuring reliable signal integrity in electrically noisy plant environments. The card's integrated power supplies deliver +27.2 V, 27.2 V, and +15.0 V outputs for sensor excitation, while currentloop powered sensors are supported with a 6.16 mA (±5%) supply. The input impedance of 200 kΩ accommodates various transducer types, and the analog frequency range extends from DC to 60 kHz (3 dB). The card features broadband processing with configurable highpass, lowpass, and bandpass filters with slopes from 6 to 60 dB per octave, as well as narrowband order tracking capable of extracting 1/3X, 1/2X, 1X, 2X, 3X, and 4X orders using a constant Q filter (Q=28). Each channel's Alert and Danger set points are fully programmable, with adjustable time delays, hysteresis, and latching. Adaptive monitoring allows alarm limits to scale according to machine speed or other external parameters. The builtin "OK system" continuously monitors the entire measurement chain from sensor to signal conditioner detecting open circuits, short circuits, and other faults. Configuration is accomplished via the VM600 MPSx software using an RS232 connection or, in rack configurations with a CPUx card, through Ethernet.

Robust Hardware, Safety Certifications, and Application Versatility

The MPC4 200510070112 is a "standard" version card that supports all processing modes, including speed/phase reference inputs and narrowband order tracking. It features frontpanel BNC connectors providing buffered "raw" sensor outputs for all four dynamic channels and both tachometer channels, enabling easy troubleshooting with portable analysers. The card performs a comprehensive selftest and diagnostic routine on powerup, and its multicolour LEDs indicate channel status, alarms, and overall card health. The operating temperature range spans 25 °C to +65 °C, with storage from 40 °C to +85 °C and humidity tolerance up to 90% noncondensing. The "standard" MPC4 is certified to IEC 61508 and ISO 13849 for use in functional safety contexts. The card's hotswappable design permits live insertion and removal without powering down the rack, minimising downtime. When paired with the IOC4T, the MPC4 provides two processed analog outputs per dynamic channel (010 V and 420 mA signals), plus relay outputs for Alert, Danger, and system OK status. Typical applications include vibration and axial displacement monitoring for gas, steam, and hydro turbines; surveillance of centrifugal and reciprocating compressors in oil and gas; blast furnace fans; and paper mill drive systems. The card's segregation from condition monitoring cards ensures compliance with API 670 protection system requirements.

The VM600 MPC4 200510070112 machinery protection card offers a powerful, flexible, and safetycertified foundation for safeguarding critical rotating equipment. Its four dynamic and two speed channels, comprehensive signal processing, and adaptive alarming provide the realtime situational awareness necessary to prevent catastrophic failures and unplanned downtime. The card's robust construction, wide operating temperature range, and hotswappable design ensure reliable performance in demanding environments, while IEC 61508 certification delivers confidence for safetyrelated applications. For plant operators and maintenance engineers, the MPC4 supported by the VM600 MPSx software ecosystem and paired with the IOC4T represents a proven choice that enhances asset availability, extends machinery life, and supports safer, more efficient facility operations.
