How the Proximity Probe Works
Use Scenarios
Shaft Position Measurement
A primary application of proximity transducer technology is observing the position of a rotating shaft relative to the stationary probe.
Because the probe operates without physical contact with the shaft, changes in shaft position can be represented through changes in probe-to-target distance.
Shaft Vibration Measurement
Proximity probes are widely associated with shaft vibration measurements on rotating machinery.
As shaft motion changes the distance between the conductive shaft surface and the probe tip, the transducer system converts this changing gap into a displacement signal.
Why Noncontacting Measurement Matters
The probe does not need to physically touch the observed shaft or other conductive target.
Bently Nevada explains that its proximity transducer technology creates an electromagnetic field around the probe tip. Eddy currents are produced when conductive material enters that field.
The resulting changes in the RF signal allow displacement to be measured without mechanical contact between the probe and target.
This measurement principle is particularly suited to shaft-related measurements where physical contact with the rotating surface is undesirable.
